CED 4704 Potentiometer Specification

The CED 4704 USB slider potentiometer is straightforward to use. When the USB cable attached to the 4704 is plugged into an active USB port on a host computer, the computer sees a virtual serial port. Commands are given down the port, and responses returned from the 4704. This communication method will work with most application programs that support ASCII text transfer. The 4704 LED turns red if unknown commands are sent.

The LED flashes green for 200ms in response to an FL command and longer flashes by sending FL;FL;… on a line. This can be used as user signalling, or to show that communication with the host computer is established.

Return rate range:100/sec to approx. 2/min, settable by command
Indicator LEDFlash on for 200ms by command. Up to 8 FL; commands can be sent in one line
ID string“USB slider pot xx”, where xx are the last two digits of the unit's serial number
Interface:Standard USB A connector on 1800mm attached cable
Serial data format:ASCII, 9600 baud, no parity, 1 stop bit

Power required: 5 V d.c. 50mA (supplied from USB port)

Case size: 160mm (width) x 70mm (depth) x 30mm (height), excluding control knob

Weight: 300g

Calibration

The 4704 returned values are slider position ratios, independent of USB supply voltage. The zero-end travel offset (TO) is calibrated before despatch. The full-scale end-resistance on the main slider can be corrected for ageing by adjusting a single-turn trimmer accessible through a small hole in the slider case adjacent to the LED. With the slider knob fully to the right (max), adjust the trimmer so that the 4704 returns the value 100.0
